One of the reasons I am so interested in Nicki Minaj is the tension between her owning and not owning her sexuality, when she goes from cute, innocent object to be desired and taken, to fucking aggressive sex tiger (“I just shitted on em…if I had a dick I would pull it out and piss on em”). Some times I definitely lean towards the former. I was like, “Nicki, WTF? Why you play so nice when Regis put his grimy little hands on your ass?” Or even the song Coochie Shop? I know that was early in her career, but at some point I have to seriously consider what I am negotiating or giving up when I idolize her. And I do idolize her.
I recently saw new videos by a up-and-coming femmce that goes by Lady (or sometimes ThisIsLady) that gave me a clearer perspective on what Nicki is not doing.

Atleast in Yankin, there are some man slaves, right……? I really don’t know what to say about these video.
A little background on Lady:
She is signed to Big Gates Records, founded by Flordia rapper, Plies. Plies has put out a couple of songs that I really admire, so it was totally disappointing to find out it was his record label. Lady is 21 years old and from a small town in Georgia. A press release from the record label promotes her, saying “Lady’s unique look and rugged style is what made her stand out…Her lyrics are genuine life experiences and struggles so whether she is rapping about her struggles in life, her street experiences, or her in between the sheets romances, Lady is here to put her permanent stamp on what we call the Rap Game.” To be generous, some of the songs on her website are slightly more interesting than “Twerk” and “Yankin”.
Maybe I will have more critical insight into Lady at another time.
